AIB Book Club
For the principal book, we picked Thomas Peacock’s Beginnings: the Homeward Journey of Donovan Manypenny. Raised by his grandparents on a northern Wisconsin Ojibwe reservation until their passing when he is ten years old, Donovan Manypenny becomes a ward of the state of Wisconsin and enters the child welfare system – foster care, children’s home, and adoption. The trauma he experiences as a result of losing his grandparents and way of life leads him to put his past behind him for over forty-three years. At the age of fifty-three, events in his life take him back to his childhood home, retracing the historical westward migration of his Ojibwe ancestors.
For extra credit, we are also including The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. Since Tom Peacock’s book is relatively short and inexpensive, we added it. Book club members as always get 20% off of all book club purchases.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 13th at 4pm at Gale Force Coffee (10 First Street, Bayfield). We look forward to seeing you there!
